Mrs. Brecht’s Animal Science class from Prairie High School had the unique opportunity to tour the Kirkwood Tippie Beef Education Center, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in animal welfare, facility management, and cattle handling. The tour, led by Farm Manager Travis Allan, offered students a firsthand look at modern practices in the beef industry, from animal care to the operation of cattle chutes for safe handling.

During the visit, students observed key aspects of beef production, including the management of cattle facilities, bedding, feeding, and providing routine healthcare. They were able to interact directly with the cattle, running them through the center’s tub and chute system, which is designed for efficient, low-stress animal handling.

In addition to the practical experiences, the group learned about various feedstuffs used in beef production and identified different types of feed. Discussions focused on the importance of proper nutrition and care in maintaining healthy, productive cattle.

“The opportunity to connect with industry professionals like Travis Allan was incredibly beneficial for my students,” said Mrs. Brecht, the instructor for the Animal Science class. “It allowed them to see how the concepts they’re learning in the classroom come to life in real-world applications. They left the tour with a deeper understanding of both animal welfare and the management practices that are critical to the success of a beef operation.”

Travis Allan, who manages the day-to-day operations at the Kirkwood Tippie Beef Center, provided valuable insights into the responsibilities and challenges of running a successful beef operation. The students also had the chance to ask questions and discuss future educational opportunities tailored to animal production.  The tour was part of Mrs. Brecht’s ongoing efforts to provide her students with practical, hands-on learning experiences that bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry practice. By engaging directly with experts in the field, students are better prepared for future careers in agriculture and animal science.
