A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday, October 29 to mark the beginning of construction for the new Prairie Summit YMCA with approximately 200 in attendance. This new facility will serve as a vital community hub, offering a wide range of programs and services for people of all ages.
The project is a collaborative effort between the College Community School District, YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area, Conlon Construction, OPN Architects, and the City of Cedar Rapids, who have partnered to bring this important community initiative to life.
“This day is not only the culmination of years of planning, but also is the result of decades of dreaming for a pool and aquatic center for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Doug Wheeler. “This day is also a celebration of our Prairie community as it is their support, spirit, and hard work that is what is making this building a reality. This project will benefit all generations in our community.”
Key features of the Prairie Summit YMCA include both competition and recreation pools, which will serve as the home venue for Prairie swim teams and offer aquatic opportunities for younger students. Beyond its impressive aquatics amenities, the facility will feature locker rooms, two competition wood courts, a turf area, a walking track, cardio and fitness space, and two multi-use fitness classrooms. These amenities will be connected by a central core that will house a lobby, gathering space, YMCA administrative offices, and a small café with seating.
Site work has begun with completion projected for spring 2026. For more information about the Prairie Summit YMCA project, please visit the College Community School District’s website.
